Snow day

January 31, 2008 at 6:53 pm (Uncategorized)

We’ve had more snow this year than many years I can remember….yet another snow day…meaning another opportunity for the children to bicker unendingly….sigh.
Knitting? Not as much as I’d like.
Began the very cute baby hat… almost to the decreases. Few more rounds on the Fake Isle hat, but I keep forgetting to pack the DPNS and it’s too tight with the decreases….
More reading than anything. Almost done with Nora Robert’s first Circle Trilogy installment, and it’s just as good as Chris and everyone else has said it would be.
Began at work is Tanya Huff’s Of Darkness, Light, and Fire….which is amusing, different, and has me HOOKED.
I need more hours in my day to do half the things I’d like to do…Not sure how to accomplish that.
I’ve been working on diet and exercise…specifically cutting out sugar and increasing cardio. I can say honestly that I loathe every stinking minute of the cardio…I just hate it. But it sure works. 7 pounds in three weeks, where I was just flat STUCK for weeks before I started upping the cardio. In fact, last year I lost the same 5 pounds about 10 times…so losing 7 pounds is a great start and has me motivated…even to do the stinkin’ cardio…..
For my birthday, I really, really want a Dance Dance Revolution for the PS2. I’m told it is fun, fun, fun and a great workout. Many hints have been dropped, lol…we shall see what we shall see…

Stupid cord

January 21, 2008 at 3:24 pm (Uncategorized)

I can not find the camera cord…still. I was sure once I cleaned up all the Christmas mess, it would reveal itself.

But no. That would be too easy. Too nice. So, no pictures for you, kind reader. Or readers, since there appear to be two of you, lol.

I continue to plug along on the not-enough-contrast-you-fool-Fake-Isle…my 19 yo proclaimed great adoration of it, and I will foist it upon  gift it to her when finished.

Meanwhile, I visited a local yarn shop and purchased a skein of Kureyon with NO BLACK and some BLACK yarn and will make myself another Fake Isle. If black and no black are not contrast enough, I just give up on that turkey.

I also picked up this Cabin Fever pattern…I suddenly know a woman expecting twins, my neice is pregnant, a student is pregnant…and I’m finally learning, I don’t have time to make baby sweaters. I need to go smaller scale and this pattern just tickled me…I have a daughter who could be presenting me with a grandbaby in the next couple of years, and I would love to make this for a grandbaby…so….there ya go.

Once again, not enough contrast….

January 10, 2008 at 4:53 pm (Uncategorized)

When I made the baby genius scarf, I realized I did not have enough contrast between the gray of the Lamb’s Pride I chose and the Kureyon I picked…it’s lovely, but I wanted more contrast.

So when I purchased more Lamb’s Pride and Kureyon, I thought I did much better.

Cast on the for Fake Isle Hat from MagKnits..and was shown I had been mistaken. The lovely olivey-green “Oregano” LP seemed like a great contrast and there was just a tiny hint of green in the noro….but when I began the stranded part of the hat wouldn’t you know that is EXACTLY where that little hint of green showed up, making the fair isle part look….sorta muddy.

Next time:  BLACK. Or GRAY. Or some color that is not even IN the noro! Live and learn…again.

I can say I am happier with the two-colored knitting part than I was on the Norweigian mitten I tried… my color work looked like CRAP on that mitten and I wondered if I was “stranded challenged”…but the hat looks great as far as the knitting goes.

That’s it. That’s all that’s fit to print knit wise. I’m working on dance stuff hot and heavy again, and working on losing weight.

Which seems pretty insurmountable. However, a FREE site which is absolutely awesome is sparkpeople.com. Did I mention FREE?? It is an awesome site…better than Biggest Loser (for which I PAID and was disappointed….). So I have the tools, now I just need to DO what I need to DO.

I’ve given in…and gone to Ravelry

January 7, 2008 at 7:59 pm (Uncategorized)

I had decided I wasn’t going to “do” the Ravelry thing. Like I have time, you know? I barely have time to BLOG much less play around on another site. But….too many references to “oh you can see that on my Ravelry page here….” and of course I couldn’t…well. I asked for an invitation.

It came over the weekend. And then I got sucked into Ravelry. It’s immense-ness. It’s amazing-ness. The patterns…the pictures…the knitting lust. Wowza.

I finished the mittens from the Handy Knitter’s book…and overall are unsatisfied. I’ve begun anew, still with stash yarn, and I’m modifying them. Hee, hee, you can read all about it, on my Ravelry page, LOL, here: SaharaKnits

TGIF

January 4, 2008 at 7:57 pm (Uncategorized)

Oy. I’m not quite sick anymore…but I’m exhausted and about as useful as a wet noodle.

Mitten #1 is done, all ends wove in and all. Mitten #2 is past the ribbing and in the middle of the thumb gussett.

So…I liked them A LOT before I finished off the top of mitten 1. I think I would have preferred a bit less lengthy mitten and perhaps the next pair, I would kitchener the top rather than doing the “knit till 6 stitches remain and draw through” method. It just doesn’t excite me. But…I finished it and I forced myself to cast on IMMEDIATELY for it’s mate.

I know myself too well. They are for Jodie and she is delighted. She has an old car that never really warms up and these are to stay in the car for those cold mornings.

I’m looking at mitten patterns over at knittingpatterncentral.com and I’m sure to find another pattern…god knows I have a lot of Cascade 220 alone to knit a mountain of them if I should desire.

EZ, and all things requiring much function of my brain, are put on hold until I am 1) off cold medicine and 2) feeling less wet noodlish.

And then I got over myself…

January 3, 2008 at 7:48 pm (Uncategorized)

I was pretty crabby last time I posted. Mostly, mad at my lack of logic skills….because that’s what I think it takes to be a true devotee of EZ…logic skills. I am someone who longs to be able to finish the “logic problem” in the puzzle book…. but who never can. The mitten was put out of it’s misery not long after I posted in fact.

I have re-accepted the realization that my knitting needs to serve several purposes in my life…one of them is to make my brain work….but not make my brain HURT. So, I pulled out my trusty Knitter’s Handy Book of Patterns and cast on for that simple mitten I should have started with in the first place.

Only problem, I think the cold medicine affected my thinking….and as I continued with it I realized it was GINORMOUS….Like, it would fit a polar bear paw in fact…..and yet a third time the mitten was begun. It’s now almost to the decreasing for the fingers and I love it. Made of stashed Cascade 220 and Quattro, it is a happy mitten.

I on the otherhand am ill. Still. I tried to go to work this a.m. and made it two hours before i had to drag my sorry heinie home. I MUST get well. One of my goals for 2008 is to get more control over my health.

That’s it. That’s all my cold-remedy-addled brain can come up with for today.

Bleepity Bleep Bleep mittens….

January 2, 2008 at 5:06 pm (Uncategorized)

Oh Yeah. Now I remember why I have avoided Elizabeth Zimmerman’s works….

I end up feeling like a flaming idiot, that’s why.

She is much like my beloved Aunt and Grandma….incredibly intelligent with a dry wit…and her brain worked much differently than mine. The dedication in the book to the “blind followers”….that’s me. You know what, I’m fine with being a blind follower. Bleepity bleep fine, thank you very much.

The mitten so far looks….like crapola. I am reminding myself, that tho I took a colorwork class and practiced a bit, this is my first fair isle/stranded project. I can forgive the tension issues…..but the mitten itself…..pure crap. Crap on a stick, no less.

Argh. I’ve been sick since New Year’s Eve, thanks to the coworker who insisted on coming in sick I’m sure. I finished Koolhaus AND made myself finish the simple rib (Player ripoff) Twinkle Toes hat and cast on for the mittens last night while watching Biggest Loser (of which I am now a total convert and fan – Reality TV got me at last….).

EZ’s so-called “pithy” instructions are not pithy enough. Just tell me what to do, dammit. I’ve reached the patterning on the mitten and will begin the thumb, I think. I’m a mite confused…uh, I’m a LOT confused about the thumb and am wondering why I didn’t make a SOLID pair or maybe a striped pair to start. Noooooo…..I had to do the Norwegian ones.

I loaded the camera software onto the newer computer….but can’t find the cord that goes between camera/computer. One of these days, i really WILL get pictures up again. sigh.

After all that b*tching….really, I am not quite as crabby as I sound…just frustrated with the “even an idiot could do it” tone of the book, when i am obviously exactly the kind of idiot she is talking about in the forward. Blind. Following.

You betcha baby. And just fine with it.
