The New Knitty

December 10, 2008 at 9:52 pm (Uncategorized)

I’ve waited with anticipation for the new Knitty…checked daily, hoping there would be something there to jump start my knitting mojo.

Nope. Nuttin’. I looked at the socks…eh. The mittens…eh. The hats…eh…with maybe a little interest in topographie. Other than that….eh. Sorta disappointing to me. I need a pretty small project or it won’t. get. done. Period. I need to not purchase yarn. Nothing in the new Knitty grabbed me and/or fit the criteria. I’m thinking maybe another Koolhaus hat… for ME. We’ll see.

Have YOU seen any small and fun patterns lately? Enquiring minds wanna know…

Bad pennies will turn up….

December 4, 2008 at 9:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Yesterday, a new knitter coworker had me lend a hand on a troublesome pattern….I was simply SHOCKED to see it was a FiberTrends pattern, lol. They’ve never been my favorite and this one – for a knitting bag – assumes the knitter is clairvoyant, apparently. I mentioned the felting process and said I’d bring in something to show what she was after by the end of the process. I remembered the bag….a little purse..but couldn’t for the life of me remember WHAT bag it was. After I dragged it out and brought it in and she oohed and ahed over it..I had to go back and scan my blog to figure out what it was.

Truly pathetic, but unsurprising.

It was Norma’s version of the Sofie bag. Doh. How could I have forgotten? Perhaps because I knit it freaking three YEARS ago.

And it STILL does not have the oh-so-cute little bamboo handles on it I purchased either. I am such a sad knitter.

I am knitting, albiet not a lot at a time on the socks. I’m in the home stretch – the leg (it’s toe up) of the second sock. Oh, wait, maybe not. Maybe I’m between the toe increases and heel? Been a couple weeks since I worked on it. Time to get it out, eh?

Why write here? I’ve lost my small readership – with the exception of the lovely Chris – bless her. Why write on such LITTLE amounts of knitting going on in my life? And so sporadically for cripes sake? Perhaps it’s time to dust off the ol’ blog USE it. Hmm. What an idea.

I finished something

October 10, 2008 at 8:22 pm (Uncategorized)

A knit something actually. Don’t faint, it’s true! It’s a rather ugly little dog sweater. Jodie took pics and I’ll see about downloading them this weekend. I made myself finish it ’cause Mr Bijou Man was shivering like he ws dying don’t ya know…

I used a nasty acrylic kinda yarn – name forgotten at the moment – that knotted up constantly in the center of the skein till I thought I would lose my mind or it would have been done earlier I think.

Now…I need to finish my socks. My mind is racing about OTHER things I want to knit tho…so I’m not sure if I’ll go the route of self discipline and finish the socks or leap with abandon into a new project. We shall see.

Reading “Knitting Rules” which I snagged on our last trip to Powell’s…yes, the trip where we blew a tire on the freeway just off one of the bridges where there was NO WHERE to go. That was a fun one.

But anyway, “Knitting Rules”….love it. I hang my head in shame and admit, this is the first Harlot book I’ve read. I love her writing on her blog…why have I resisted thus far? Who knows, but I’m enjoying it very much.

There. I’ve posted. I’ve knit something again. It’s Friday. It’s all good.

Almost done…

August 25, 2008 at 3:33 pm (Uncategorized)

The first toe-up sock is almost done…I finished the heel flap over the weekend at the coast and now it’s the cuff. There won’t be much of a cuff, maybe 2 inches if I’m lucky. The yarn has dwindled to a VERY small ball.

I’ve been thinking about the fiddly part I don’t like – picking up a stitch each row on the heel flap on the 2 circs made me nutty. I could leave them on the heel needle instead of switching them to the instep needle as directed and then I wouldn’t have to transfer one stich at the end of each row 34 times. Of course, that would mean I would really have to pay attention to what I was doing – something I’m not always sure of doing – but it bears consideration in the light of dreading it on the second sock.

All in all, I’m very happy with the way the toe-up sock was knit and the way it fits, not to mention feeling much more secure I wasn’t going to run out of yarn 20 rows from completion!

The coast was stunning Saturday – warm, sunny, beautiful weather. Our dancing was not so stunning, the music cut out on us three times and – it wasn’t pretty. But all in all, a great getaway just the same!

Fiddley knitting

August 22, 2008 at 1:21 pm (Uncategorized)

Is fiddley a word? Dunno, but it describes it. I finished the gusset increases on the toe-up sock…then the heel extension and now I’m on the heel flap. Since I’m following a pattern written for 4 dpn with 2 circs, the part about slipping a stitch from the other needle at the end of each row is very fiddlely indeed.

Could I have just chosen a two-circ pattern for a toe up? Well, no. That would have been simpler and God knows I don’t like simple or uncomplicated. It seemed quite easy to convert to 2 circs and actually, it has been pretty easy up until the “move x stitches from needles 1 and 2 to needles blah and blah”…which then you know, required me to THINK. Right now, knitting is my only relaxation and down time and I don’t wanna have to fire up the ol’ brain too much to do it.

But..I figured it all out with only minor cussage and overall, I really like the toe up method.

I’m extremely glad I did try it with this yarn, as the remaining ball is getting very small, and I’m suspecting I’m going to have an anklet rather than a full-size sock when it ends. If I’d started from the top….I don’t think it would have been pretty.

Leaving for the coast tonight – we’re dancing in a bellydance show Saturday night in Lincoln City. I am totally excited about getting away from town, away from the young ‘uns, and even not being responsible for the dog!

Continuing on with the toe up sock

August 19, 2008 at 2:08 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m now midway through the gusset on my first toe-up sock. This sock has been sort of cobbled together using More Sensational Knitted Socks and the “You’re putting me on” socks.

I’m finding the MSKS book is not as specific as I apparently need….when I got to the point where I felt I needed to start the gusset, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the instructions, so I turned back to the other pattern and went from there.

The biggest reason I chose to try a toe up sock was the yarn…it was a beautiful prize I won quite some time back…but there is less than 200 yards per hank. While I know the few socks I’ve finished have taken *about* 200 or less, I did not want to have the anxiety of wondering if I was going to run out of yarn! Besides, I needed to learn something new.

So… a few rows a day or so is all I’m really getting done on the sock, but it feels GOOD to be knitting again! It also feels really good to be knitting for ME. I am so bad about knitting for others and never myself. Right now, my job is stressful, my life is packed, and I don’t feel like there’s a whole lot out there that I’m doing for ME…so this is a good thing.

I’ve also come to the sad conclusion that tho I’ve fought it, I’m happier with socks knit on size 1 or so. The instant gratifier in me really wants to knit socks on 2 or 3’s….but for one, I have a lot of pretty fine sock yarn that will not translate well at being knit that loosely and for another, I prefer the look of a smaller stitch as well. So…I’ll be purchasing a pair of size 1 addi circs for that purpose – when I finish these socks! I need the incentive to finish them, and finish BOTH of them and buying the needles will be it.

On a non-knitting note, school can not start soon enough – The children and their bickering are on my very last nerve. Whew!

Writing a post every four months whether I need to or not….

August 11, 2008 at 2:28 pm (Uncategorized)

Wow, time does fly. Has it flown by with knitting? H*ll no. It’s flown by with work and bellydance and oh yeah, my family, in that order.

However, I decided that no matter what, when I had some spare time I was going to knit, period! I’d planned on starting some stocking stuffers….I loved the purse-size kleenex cozy things  I had seen during a very brief period of looking at knitting on the web. Chrishad linked to the pattern..uh, a long time ago and I wrote and asked her for the link again. She obliged (bless you Chris! Here I drop out of the blue after MONTHS…and you reply swiftly anyway. You rock). I saw the pattern suggested sock yarn…of which, ahem, you know I have a few hanks of. Mmmm, maybe enough for 20 or more pairs of socks. So yeah, I have sock yarn.

I went out and began delving into the bins of sock yarn…..and thought, wow, I really wanted to knit socks. And I’m not doing it. Oh, here’s this yarn I won in a blog contest…here’s that yarn I fell in love with and had to have…you know, for socks.

So I went in the house and looked at my sock books. Mind you, I’ve finished ONE pair of socks in the last two years. ONE pair. Let’s not discuss how many I’ve began, however. I sat and thought for a bit. What do I really want?

I want to try to knit toe-up socks for ME. So I went back to Chris’s site  and looked, sure enough there on her sidebar was a link for toe up socks (I KNEW there would be!). I finagled around with the figure-8 cast on a few times…stomped my feet and gnashed my teeth a bit…and then… it worked! Once the toe was completed….I went back to the books at hand and decided on the Decorative Rib from More Sensational Socks. I knit and knit…and I have a toe and a few rows done.

Felt good. Felt really, really good actually. I have to schedule knitting time in, period. It relaxes me…it increases my creativity. Why so easy to shove it aside then?

Good question.

Little dogs

April 10, 2008 at 2:10 pm (Uncategorized)

Oh the joys of puppyhood. It is much like suddenly having a baby in the house again. In an un-baby-proofed house.

Couldn’t find him this a.m. Where was he? Behind the dryer, doing god knows what.  He wants to chew on electrical cords. He wants to roam around under furniture I can’t get him out of. He wants to eat/chew/taste everything. Literally…everything. He hates his halter. He is not impressed with the sweater I made nor the one I’m working on and tries to bite you when you put either the halter or the sweater on him. He hates his leash and sits his stubborn little 9 week old butt down when it is on and will not move but sits and cries. Pathetically. As if you were killing him. He has the attention span of a a bite of dog food…run around the house..oh yeah, FOOD! eat another bite or two…run and find a toy. Ad nauseum.

And I love him to bits. He makes me laugh many many times a day and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. But I could drop kick him to Kansas sometimes he is such a pill.

Cast on the Lucky Penny sweater from Knitty, after getting a corrected version from the very-nice designer emailed to me – apparently there were issues with the Knitty version. I like it so far. Using stashed (go me! Do you KNOW how long it’s been since I bought yarn????) Caron Simply Soft in Shadows – love that stuff and now MIchael’s here isn’t carrying it. Grrr. The sweater is the smaller size, XS, but still too big for Bijou for awhile. He definitely NEEDS a sweater tho, since he shivers like he’s been in a deep freeze after being out even just a bit in 60ish weather, and below that? He’s a “pup-cicle” – crying he’s cold and shivering like crazy.

Finally, FINALLY today, after a week of being effing sick, I think I will get over it. Maybe. Coughed so hard this a.m. for so long, I started heaving and couldn’t stop. Joy joy joy. Cough drops, here I come.

Ah…now to work. You know…so I can buy yarn to make tiny dog sweaters, lol.

A VERY overdue post and picture

April 8, 2008 at 3:49 pm (Uncategorized)

finally gave up and purchased a replacement camera cord so I could download the pics off my camera.

This is long, long overdue. I won a prize at Chez Stumbling Over Chaos many, many moon ago. She sent me a FABULOUS box O’ goodies. Here it is:

It contained one thing I’ve wanted a long time: A sheep measuring tape. I love it like no other. It also contained fabulous orange/black kitty socks, and a compliation of cat songs on CD not to mention, some very fun sock yarn.

Fabulous, no??

Me? Uh…home sick. Flu/cold/crud of some kind.  I tried knitting a dog sweater, which of course I had to fart around with and try to make it fit Bijou now in puppyhood, and of course it doesn’t. Got on Ravelry for the first time in MONTHS and yet again, I am astounded by the artistry of the people there.

Now, I’m tired again. Been up a good 20 minutes and I think I might die. So I’ll go back to bed. I’ll post again, you know….eventually. 🙂

Yes, I am alive…

April 4, 2008 at 2:41 pm (Uncategorized)

Thanks for asking Chris, LOL.

Knitting?  uh, does a baby bib count? Working my buns off, dancing my buns off (alas not literally, lol) and sleeping in between.

However, I have new inspiration. This is our new pup, Bijou.

Funnily he is named (by Jodie) “bijou” which in cajun means a little of this and a little of that (loosely interpreted). It is also the dance moniker of two lovely ladies we dearly love in the bellydance community. He’s not papered, but is a full blooded mini doxie.

Perhaps even I can finish a dog sweater THIS small, lol.
